The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) is specializing in the field of innovative production technology. The focuses of the IPT are on the following fields: usage of unconventional active energies, handling of new materials, optimisation of conventional processes, precision machining, quality test and capital budgeting. Between the IPT and the RWTH exists a contract for cooperation.

The laboratory for machine tools and production engineering (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen operates in the region of innovative production technique. With more than 500 employees, the WZL conceals following fields of research: excellence cluster, assembly technology, machine tools, gear technology, production technology, production measurement technology, quality management and production engineering.
